最近上網東查西找，最常去的一個網站就是靠DONATE支持住的。
DONATE的力量有多大？答案是可以大到可以支持一個全世界流量曾經達到第五大，目前流量也還有第七大的世界級網站營運十年（從2001年至今）。
下面是最近維基百科創辦人之一的JIMMY WALES呼籲網民們捐款的公開信（中文版可以看這裡），裡面很簡潔的提及目前維基百科的營運概況（實際營運維基百科的機構是維基媒體基金會）。就維基百科自己揭露的資料顯示，他們目前共有六百七十幾台的伺服器與不到一百名的員工。
因此，我們可以用最粗糙、不科學的方法來粗估維基百科一年的營運維持費用。他們說雖然有近百名的員工，但只有少部分是全職支薪工作者，而組織中的高層理事會成員都是義務擔任。好吧，算只有三分之一，也就是三十人是全職支薪員工，再以台灣爆肝工程師一個月三萬塊薪水來計算（我們不能指望做慈善事業的人就一定只能吸空氣當飯吃吧？而且這個價碼還完全不考慮國外的物價水準），這樣算下來一年（以十三個月計）的薪水也要一千一百多萬新台幣，這還沒加計其他額外的員工福利。
再來算算六百七十九台伺服器，不算折舊攤提，以每台每月五百元新台幣的電費來算，一年下來就要花掉四百多萬元。當然，這也尚未加計頻寬、伺服器機房的空間費用…等等許多必要費用。就更別提經濟學家念茲在茲的機會成本了（也就是下面那封公開信裡JIMMY WALES所提的，他們沒有將維基百科帶往營利導向的網站經營模式）。
即使以如此低估的角度來看維基百科的營運，都不算是一件輕鬆的工作。但是維基百科辦到了。靠著全世界的人們貢獻出一點人力、物力與財力，雖然仍有很多令人爭議的問題，但不能否認的是，維基百科建構起人類前所未有的資訊庫，扎扎實實地改變世界。更令人興奮的是，只要有心，我們也能參與其中。

Wikipedia is the #5 site on the web and serves 450 million different people every month – with billions of page views.
Commerce is fine. Advertising is not evil. But it doesn't belong here. Not in Wikipedia.
Wikipedia is something special. It is like a library or a public park. It is like a temple for the mind. It is a place we can all go to think, to learn, to share our knowledge with others.
When I founded Wikipedia, I could have made it into a for-profit company with advertising banners, but I decided to do something different. We’ve worked hard over the years to keep it lean and tight. We fulfill our mission, and leave waste to others.
If everyone reading this donated $5, we would only have to fundraise for one day a year. But not everyone can or will donate. And that's fine. Each year just enough people decide to give.
