這是西方流傳的民間習俗。
當然，年代久遠流傳下來的習俗，一定會有很多附會的傳說。維基百科的解釋是說生日吃蛋糕這個習俗從古羅馬時代就傳了下來。
另外在其他網路上查找到的資訊則是指在古代的時候只有貴族階級的人有資格在生日時吃蛋糕，因此蛋糕象徵財富與權貴，當一般人也跟著富裕之後，便模仿起貴族的慶祝方式，因而廣為在西方流傳。
當然，每個地區不同的文化裡都會有不同的慶生食品，不一定是蛋糕，也有可能是餅乾或甜點之類的。像在華人地區，人們就喜歡用「麵線」來祝賀壽星能夠健康長壽。尤其是豬腳麵線。
下次再來找找看為什麼華人在祝賀時或去霉氣都要吃豬腳麵線好了。
至於吹蠟燭的習俗，則是可追溯至古希臘人對於月神阿忒密斯的祭祀方式。因為當時有些人們相信，以糕點奉獻給月神的同時在上頭點上蠟燭，其燭煙可以將人們的願望帶往天庭讓衆神知曉；而在德國地區，人們則是會將一根大蠟燭放在蛋糕中央，象徵著「生命之光」。
所以，今天晚上我要去我阿嬤家吃蛋糕配麵線了……
